The Evolution of Emojis

It seems like yesterday, but its not. not so long ago, Emojis only existed in the ‘real’ world as bumpers stickers and toys.

Emojis first surfaced during my chat days, my msn & my ISQ days to be precise. They were only restricted to facial impressions. To be specific, happy, sad, & neutral.

From the inception of mobile phones, emojis have been always a part of it. And as mobile phones progressed in technology & interface, so did emojis evolve not only in graphics but in variety, subjects, objects, fruits, & animals.

A shift happened between the generation that first saw emojis and the generation that were born into it.

The latter generation, the Millenials place a large emphasis and have a difficulty communicating with each other without Emojis, they use emojis always to express their feelings and therefore, they are not used to writing the words (I’m Angry/I’m Sad), they use words. Unlike the previous generation who were used to expressing their feelings without the use of Emojis

.

We come to today, where emojis shape a big part in communications between each other, we see that every emojis is available in every skin tone color to be customized for every person in the world from different backgrounds. Yes, Emojis have come a long way since then, today, Emojis have to go to a committee to assess and grant/decline any emoji from entering into our mobile phones. There is an Emoji encyclopedia where all expressions and feelings are indexed and defined.

And people still have difficulty finding the right emoji to express their feelings?
